This restaurant is always acceptable. It lacks the awesome food of yang Ming but for bala it can't be beat. Services and prices are always good. The food is good and reliably large portions. You may need take home bags. It is clean , quiet and pleasant. We go a lot. Love the pork dishes, especially moo shoo. The boys like general tsaus chicken. Good hot and sour soup. Drinks are reasonably priced.

Fantastic sashimi. Chinese fair was pretty much average take-out quality. Ambiance of the restaurant was fine and service was quick. Looking forward to trying more of the sushi bar.

House salad with brown, wilted lettuce and excessively-oily eggplant and tofu dish has inspired me to write about this place. Another item to consider avoiding: vegetarian General Tso's -- it's more breading (in some cornmeal/flour mixture) than seitan so while you already feel bad for consuming deeply-fried food, you feel even worse once you realize that what's INSIDE the deep-fried shell is more crap and very little seitan/protein. Also, the Teriyaki Tofu had an unappealing flavoring -- not the typical teriyaki flavor you'd expect. The Mock Chicken with Cashew Nuts and veggie sushi rolls are good and the fact that they make sushi with brown rice is a definite positive. So really, the food can be hit-or-miss, with a leaning toward 'miss.' I gave 2 stars, instead of 1, because I find the dine-in service to be very good, efficient, and personal (if you come here often, which we do because of proximity).

Love the food it is amazing the only thing they need is delivery! Still I recommend trying this place for the amazing sushi!

Had dinner here today off a groupon I purchased for 25.00, the bill came to .78 cents an I was happy about that. The cook was reserved an no real entertainment whatsoever for the kids that were seated at the table. The hibachi rice was dry an lacked flavor. The rest of meal was pretty good no real complaints. Will go back again.

My dad and I used to go here once a week to meet and catch up. It is a great little restaurant with efficient service and friendly staff. At this point I feel like I've tried everything on the menu and I have nothing negative to say about any of the dishes. They give you large portions, so I always go home with leftovers. My suggestion would be to order a few things off the menu to share and take home. I would definitely recommend this place if you're in the area looking for some great Chinese and Japanese food!

Do NOT get the sushi. I just ate here for dinner with some friends around 8:30 PM on a Sunday. I was craving sushi, but I had a feeling that their sushi may not be fresh so I had to ask the waitress. I asked how often/when they get their shipment of fish. She said everyday. She made it sound like it came every day and it was fresh. Convinced, I ordered the Shangri La Maki roll which was Salmon Avocado with Spicy Tuna on the outside. As soon as I got in my car, my stomach started to feel funny. Since then my stomach is churning inside and making weird noises. I am afraid that I will get food poisoning and will anxiously be expecting to go #3. Sorry for the TMI, but I have to share this to warn you. The sushi was fishy and funky! Terrible. Now excuse me, I'm going to be sick.

I ordered the NY strip steak and shrimp hibachi lunch which other reviewers said was a safe choice. I was given no option for how I like my meat prepared, which is usually medium rare. I received a plate of food with the steak, shrimp, fried rice, and grilled vegetables all on a plate. The shrimp was good. The hibachi sauces were good. The fried rice (basically soy sauce rice with eggs) was good. The veggies were good. The steak was terrible. The thing is the steak could've been good, but it was cooked way too long.

We went in at 9.30 on Friday and they were closing down the hibachi counter and were cleaning up. I could smell Lysol throughout my dinner. it says open till 11 on Fridays but we felt like we were there at closing time at 9.30. Service was below average.

Pretty typical suburban Asian food. The portions are small but our food did come out quickly. However thus was at 9 pm so it wasn't busy. The four seasons and scallops were decent and the shrimp with broccoli was standard. We didn't try the sushi but the entrees were a bit on the salty side. Service was good although they did forget to bring us chopsticks and utensils initially.

I give it three stars because the food is great. Other than that, this place is a real doozy. The female servers are terrible and have the worst attitudes! We have been here about five times, each time using a Groupon, and literally every time it's the same way. We keep coming back hoping for something different and we don't get it. Well today was our last straw. Good riddance Shangri-La Inn!

We went here for a business meeting, and got to enjoy a private Hibachi lunch. It was a monday lunch. I got the Shrimp Hibachi Lunch, which included fresh cooked Veggies, fried rice and perfectly done shrimp. The lemon zest and juice that our chef used on the Shrimp was fantastic. Will try this place out on a non-work day. They have a Chinese and a Japanese Menu.

Possibly the worst dinner ever. We ordered one of their "today's special" seafood ramen noodle bowl ($13.99!!!) and chirashi sushi. The noodle was absolutely horrible; all the seafood were from HMart frozen mix seafood package, extremely fishy tasting and salty, not a bit of freshness, thus the heavy salty tasting miso broth in an failed attempt to cover it up. Some of chirashi's pieces were not fresh at all. We complained to the waitress about their lack of quality in the noodle and the outrageous pricing, her reason was that the restaurant is located in a "high end" area. Just my opinion: I don't mind paying the price in nice neighborhoods, but higher quality should come with the pricing. Trust me, don't go to this place, you don't want to be paying your high end pricing for some real low quality food.

I would recommend going to the hibachi it is really fun an interesting for all ages they make there food right in front of you. If not then you are just having food Asian foods at a normal restaurant which is not always bad especially if you are a small party.

Just now getting around to doing this review, but I refuse to eat here again. As we sat down to lunch, a roach crawled across the table, and after eating the sushi, my partner came down with food poisoning. If I could give negative stars, I would.

Love this place. We had sushi for two and it was great tasting and very reasonably priced. Spider roll was best I had in a while. Also, very kid frendly. There is also hibachi and chinese menu. We only had japanese.

Have been in before for lunch a few times for work and at each experience both sushi and Chinese selections were good and service was fine. Recently stopped in on a weekend (non-work day) between their lunch and dinner hours, so had to order take-away -Gen'l Tsao chicken, some sushi and sashimi. Wow! Crazy good! Sashimi was just perfect, chicken was better than most, plus prices were right in target. will definitely stop back again on weekend.

Shangri La is great for both takeout and sit in. The hibachi is great and the chefs truly do put on a show every time you sit at the hibachi bench. I normally order the house lo mien, which has pork, chicken, beef, and vegetables all incorporated. I recommend that as a great meal for 2 or even 1. Also, they have their own sushi bar, so you can order whatever sushi you want. Absolute recommendation.

We have a set of area restaurants that we know will not make our stomach rebel. Shang Gri La is our go-to Americanized version of Chinese and Japanese food. (Of course, the idea of having both Chinese and Japanese food in the same restaurant is simply odd....) Each and every time, we can count on the food being exactly the same as it was the time before. Nothing fancy here, nothing inventive, nothing trendy. The food is pretty good--not great...but very few eateries are terrific and, really, can an Americanized version of Chinese/Japanese cookery even be truly yummy? I do, however, avoid the green beans w tofu and the eggplant w tofu because it is very, very oily. My current choice is teriyaki salmon w salad and miso soup. Hubby likes the orange beef, the egg rolls and the BBQ short ribs. And, for some unknown reason, I love the crunchy noodles. They will modify the menu items as requested, though creating your own food concoction is problematic. We eat in, take out (including taking out into the adjacent Starbucks) and get delivery via MainLine Delivery. We've been going there for so long, I'm not even aware any more of the quality and demeanor of the table service nor the ambiance. Though, thinking about it, I'd venture to say they are no nonsense efficient and arm's length friendly. Again, it's very comfortably familiar to us; we do not expect a 'dining experience' and we know that we will not get those unwelcome, post-prandial reminders.

Went there with dearest husband, faithful dining companion, and three others for hibachi. We arrived on the early side of dinner - not super crowded when we arrived, a healthy room of people when we left. The restaurant was well lit, clean, with a contemporary asian 'feel'. Service at the onset was prompt and responsive - drink orders, etc. We were first given the standard ginger salad, which was not as tasty as it is at Kotatsu in Ardmore. Our Hibachi Chef came out then. He was very friendly and engaging, and even funny at times. His presentation was fairly standard for this type of meal and he was good at what he did. We all ordered various hibachi - everything from chicken to shrimp to steak to snapper & scallops. The consensus from the group was that the seafood selections were strongest, the chicken was the weakest, dry and almost tasteless. Once our Hibachi chef came out the support service went down the tubes. Salad bowls were never cleared, making a crowded table. Drinks were not refilled until we literally flagged down a server from another table, and even then the server did not ask if anyone else needed a drink refill too when the first person asked. Someone did show up at the end to deliver checks and ask about takeout. Now, for my pet peeve: having diners pack their own takeout. Yep, they did. I admit, it's my own personal thing. Having been a server myself, I expect to have my leftovers packed and bagged for me as a courtesy. Overall, it was fine. Just fine. Nothing in the food itself stood out. The Hibachi Chef was more entertaining than most, which is a plus. Service was very uneven in terms of attentiveness and actual, um, service.

The boyfriend and I ate here last night since he had picked up a livingsocial deal. I was excited to try another area hibachi place after my some-what disappointment in my experience in Benihana. We arrive and are seated right away, since most of the restaurant is empty (at 5PM on a Saturday). There was a large group seated at the neighboring table celebrating a graduation though. Anyway, the chef was very chatty and made a lot of jokes, but as for the show that hibachi is supposed to provide, he didn't do anything really (except for lighting the grill on fire). My shrimp was super good although the rice and vegetables left something to be desired. The vegetables consisted of 80% large portion of onions and 20% of a few pieces of broccoli and zucchini and such; therefore most of the vegetables were inedible due to the amount of onion. The rice was also lacking for me; the boyfriend tasted mine and admitted that something was different (perhaps there was more sauce or something in mine?) The miso soup and the shrimp were the only two good things about my meal. All in all, the bill came to about $12 for our meal(over the $15 originally paid for the coupon). There are too many other good chinese/hiabchi places that I know of (even though one is in Reading) and I'd rather trek up there than back to the main line to Shangri-La.

This place has an identity problem! It's trying to be both a Chinese and a Japanese restaurant simultaneously. The decor is a weird mix of both that is likely to either disturb or amuse many folks. This is a good place for lunch as the sushi crowd can do their thing and everyone else can go Chinese. There are an amazing number lunch specials. They even have Hibachi lunch specials. Everything is just fine but nothing is going to make you go "Wow!" If you are in the mood for an adult beverage these folks have a liquor license. This includes a nice selection of beers. If I'm in the area I have no problem stopping by for a quick Asian lunch.

Great ambience, super friendly owner and nice, attentive staff. Food is spectacular and outshines any other Chinese restaurant in the area. Their sushi rivals the many sushi-only places in Philly. Never a wait, always a smile, nice atmosphere, reasonable prices, great to go alone or with a big group. Not a good first few dates place- a bit more casual than that- but otherwise I recommend for anything!

Far and away, my favorite Chinese/Japanese Restaurant of all time. I've been going there since before they had their fire-induced remodel, and I'll always come back. The food is inexpensive, the staff is courteous(they even remember us!), and the food comes out quickly after you order. I'd even be willing to buy a franchise from them, if they did that sort of thing.

Food = EXCELLENT! Service = just so, so... This place has just about the best Asian food at reasonable prices on the Main Line and the ambiance of the restaurant is very relaxing. The service, unfortunately is not so great. After ordering our appetizer and drinks, the waitress came back 3 times in 5 minutes to take our entree orders. I finally said that we wanted to wait to order until our appetizer arrived. She gave us about another minute and came back again (before our appetizers came) to see if we were ready to order. VERY ANNOYING!

I tried the beef sukiyaki and did not like it all that much. Need to return and try some sushi to give a better review. The turtle cheesecake for dessert obviously came out of a box but was pretty good nonetheless. As far as the ambiance, there was an exceptionally noisy group celebrating a birthday in the steakhouse section, and that section is not very well cordoned off from the sushi section, so we were subjected to their top-of-their-lungs hooping and hollering all evening long. Decor overall is pretty nice, but the crowd it attracts could use some work. Definitely a step below some of the other choices in the area, though the prices are pretty good.

warning: the sesame chicken is made with PEANUT BUTTER. sadly, I realized this after I got home. The fried rice is good, and the curry chicken gets rave reviews in my house.

My girlfriend and I lived in Bala Cynwyd for two years while she was in grad school. Shangri La became a staple of our time there and we both very much enjoyed going there. We regularly had take-out from there and once or twice a month we would stop in for hibachi or a sit-down meal. The owner/manager was always around and is very friendly and outgoing. He often made drinks for us at the small bar and talked with us while we waited to be seated. The food on the hibachi side is as good as any other hibachi place that I have been to, which is quite a few. Admittedly, the chefs here aren't quite as animated and theatrical as they are in some places, but I feel like the quality of the food more than makes up for it. I do not claim to be a sushi aficionado, however I was always impressed with the quality and freshness of the rolls I would order with my take out. Their standard food is excellent. They use only real white meat chicken in their dishes, which is more than can be said for a lot of Chinese take-out establishments. Overall, I very much enjoyed the food and atmosphere at Shangri La. It is one of the things that we miss most about that area. I would recommend it to anyone.

I entered the restaurant with low expectations. Boring decor and a cookie-cutter menu. The parking lot needs repaving, but fortunately they can use their sushi rice to fill in the potholes. I am not a stickler, I have never noticed the quality of rice in a restaurant before. And the fish was mediocre. And the service was poor. Under no circumstances will I visit this restaurant again. If I am forced to, I will avoid the sushi at all costs.

I came back for another lunch and had hibachi. It was better than the sushi, but not by much. This place still gets a resounding "meh."

  • Bonnie S.

I've always gotten good sushi and good service. The special rolls are a refreshing change from the standard stuff found in other places. We also enjoy their chinese menu. Not sure what the negative reviews are about, but my experience is quite different.

  • Joel B.

Wonderful ambiance, service, food. I've come here four times and every experience has been consistently good. The hibachi chicken and salmon was a bit dry last time, but the waiter apologized and gave us a complimentary dessert. We'll order something else next time. But the waiter's and the management's solicitous reaction reassured us that this is a quality restaurant that values their customers and places a high value on service. The restaurant has a pleasant appearance and is very clean, including the bathrooms. This is now one of my favorite restaurants.

  • J K.

While not my favorite Chinese in the area, this restaurant is an OK place I usually get take out from them becaue it's close to my house. From the Japanese menu, I recommend the teriyaki dishes. The sushi is just OK. From the Chinese menu, I really like the orange chicken and the fresh fish special with black bean sauce. I have not tried the hibachi room but it is supposed to be good.

    (3)
  • Lori R.

Been here a bunch of times for hibachi, have tried numerous types of meats. Food is always delicious and the prices are really good. We also have had the Chinese and Japanese appetizers and everything is great. We liked it so much we rented out a hibachi room for our rehearsal dinner.

    (5)
  • Stephanie F.

I see a lot of negative reviews for the hibachi here, which I've never had. I go here strictly for the sushi. In the area, this is some of the best sushi for the price. They have unique and flavorful combinations. This is the only place that I've ever tipped a sushi chef while not sitting at the sushi bar.. they prepare sushi fast for it's quality. While I see other reviews for bad service here, I haven't ever had any experience that stuck out to me as horrible. Their servers may be antisocial and I'm not sure of the rhyme or reason to the way they wait their tables, but it never was so bad that it bothered me.

I have taken out Chinese from here, and found the food to be pretty good standard Cantonese/Commercial Szechuan fare. I was home alone last night (wife and kids away) and was looking for a good healthy solo dining choice. Ordinarily, I'd be slugging down Jameson's shots and eating wings, but had a pang of conscience that said raw fish was in order. I order the "Deluxe" sushi combo (about $18.00) which was about a dozen pieces of assorted Nigiri and about 5 tuna Maki. Since this was a pretty simple order, I didn't really test anything beyond the quality and freshness of the fish, which was quite up-to-par. Next time, I'll go for something more creative. If you are alone in Bala Cynwyd, sidling up to the Sushi bar here and whacking back a Sapporo (there is a good choice of Asian brews priced reasonably) at $3.50 and a plate of fresh sushi or sashimi is a pretty good way to eat a heart-healthy dinner. Service was very prompt and polite. The sushi chefs (there were two) were not particularity chatty, but I'm OK with that. I would certainly do it again.

I went here with an hour left until closing time on a weeknight with a friend of mine. We were looking for a close sushi place that we hadn't tried yet. When we walked in there were about 4 people in the restaurant and we were rushed to a table. The waitress was cold and not very friendly and definitely did not have a sense of humor about her. My friend tried to order a custom sashimi dish but the waitress pretty much said no. So we ordered some of the standard sushi and some ediname and miso. As we got closer to closing hour, the waitstaff circled our tables like vultures circling prey; asking us if they could clear what dishes were empty. This is fine but my friend was still eating. There is nothing that irks me more than having the waitress start to clear the table before everyone has finished. As far as the quality of the sushi, it wasn't bad but because we felt like we were being watched and rushed the whole time, I would skip it.

    (1)
  • Zeaten T.

Straight average. Not bad. Not great, just average. Sushi chef was probably the slowest I have ever seen, but the sushi was alright. Not fresh, but not bad. Other food was pretty good. Service was slow but waiter was apologetic for the slow service. Depending on what you get prices are average. To sum it up, it was fine.

  • Adrienne S.

Food fine, service poor. I went here last night with my mother to use the Living Social Deal I picked up a few months ago. First, we walk in and the air conditioner is leaking onto the floor with no sign nor anything to soak up the mess. Several people nearly slipped on the puddle. Second, we were standing at the counter waiting to be seated and the host took a party of six that arrived after us with no reservations and seated them before us. Once we were seated the food came pretty quickly and was decent, but when it was time to settle up it took forever to get the check and longer to get the change. I may return to Shangri-La, but only for take out.

Really good. They are friendly and both th chinese food and the sushi are both top-notch. Also, they have beer.

A well priced and very large portion chirashi sushi bowel. The decor is clean and nice. Although it is a typical main-line restaurant it is good quality for the $$ price and service is friendly.

been here a few times and went here today and had the lunch special which started with the hot n sour soup which wasnt spicy enough for me and it needs more tofu I had the lunch special which was spicy broccoli which was ok and it included an egg roll that was incredibly fresh and not old and crunchy like other places but for 6 bucks I'd rather go next door to Manny's and get the lunch special which is a sandwich and two sides

    (4)
  • Jen L.

A typical sushi hibatchi grill restaurant. Nice selection of Asian beers, wines, and warm and cold saki. Not the best habitchi grill I've been to, but they don't nickle and dime the way some others do.

I realized that if I go during lunch hours Shangri La is an okay place to go. In fact, it's pretty good because the selection of lunch specials is so plentiful and the prices are decent.

Great service, the host is awesome and always welcoming. Food is great and reasonably priced. Recommend the spicy crunchy red snapper, king crab California, and spicy tuna.

This restaurant is confusing and it is confused, I think. Some Japanese dishes and some Chinese dishes. Even the restaurant decorations are strange mixtures of Japanese and Chinese. If you have a guest who has not experienced much Japanese and/or Chinese cuisine, this may do. Otherwise, look elsewhere.

    (2)
  • Brian N.

If family friendly Hibachi is what you are after Shangri La is the place to go. Ask for Crazy Eddy, he will entertain the kids and parents alike. The food is good, but as always is the case with Hibachi, you go for the whole experience, food is only part of it.

    (4)
  • Joe S.

This was a pretty good quick place to eat. The lunch prices are not bad at all. I had the steak teriyaki bento and they gave a lot but the steak itself was unevenly cooked as the middle was a good medium/medium rare and the outside was well done. The sushi was good and everything else on the dish was okay. Though if you need a quick and affordable lunch it was not bad at all.

    (3)
  • Nora L.

This place is literally just "Eh." The food is eh, service is eh, atmosphere is eh. It's pretty close to my house so when I NEED some Chinese food or a cucumber avocado roll and I'm too lazy to drive more than 3 minutes away i'll settle for some Shang. If you're gonna order here I'd stick to the way basics. Been here for hibachi once or twice. Also just eh. It'll do in desperate times but there are better places a few miles down the road.

  • Sina S.

We love this place. Always a go to whenever we are in the mood for hibachi and or sushi. the restaurant is always crowded and we have a great time when we are there. Our last visit, the waitress was merely forgetful as we asked for water for our drink order. She kept forgetting to bring it. It wasn't until after our food came out and multiple times of asking, she brought them. She also mixed up all of our orders after we clearly stated them to her multiple times to make sure she had them correctly written down. Still, because we come here so often, we let it slide and just enjoyed the rest of our time. We will still continue to eat here, just hope we don't get that one waitress. We will definitely ask to be seated in another area if she is there.

Ordered take out tonight. Everything was so good. Very well done and enjoyable. Ive gotten food from there in the past and they've always done ok. Not a favorite choice in the past for Chinese take out. Usually went to place in baba shopping center. After tonight this place may be favorite. Everything was perfect. From the spare ribs. Dumplings, to the duck dish we tried among other things ordered It was really good. Kudos.
